Matlock Spa
David Morley Architects
Matlock Spa is transforming a north facing dis-used quarry into a vibrant new community. The concept builds on the spa town tradition with health and wellbeing as a focus of the plan. This makes it very relevant to current initiatives by bodies such as the Health Commission, Sport England and the NHS, who all acknowledge that taking part in regular physical activity is crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This all-electric, brownfield development includes a tranquil sequence of five spa villages nestled between the Derbyshire Dales and the newly energised town of Matlock – the home of ‘shabby chic’, according to Country Life magazine. Each village boasts its own distinctive character offering a variety of rural-style homes in the form of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom woodland lodges, courtyard cottages and spa villas, harmonised by a consistent approach to the use of natural stone and slate with references to the vernacular tradition of Derbyshire Dales.
The scheme will deliver 494 homes in a 700,000 sqft development. The first phase includes 1 and 2 bed apartments and 3 and 4 bed houses, many with spectacular views to the Derbyshire Dales and all with sunny gardens or terraces. Matlock Spa has been cited as achieving many of the objections set out within the Derbyshire Dales District Council Climate Change SPD.
