Furzebrook

Gruff Architects

Furzebrook is the extension and full renovation of a countryside home in the Purbeck Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

The existing building is a mid-Victorian semi-detached house, which our clients wished to have enlarged to suit the needs of their growing family. The house serves both as a second home and a guest house when our clients are away. It was important that the house had strong connections with the surrounding countryside, whilst opening up the existing small, dark rooms to create large, free-flowing spaces for facilitating relaxing times spent cooking and sharing food with family and friends. “We’ve worked with Gruff Architects for some time now on a number of projects... ...They have great expertise and a great vision, they’re responsive and flexible, they’re friendly but also professional and its a seamless and efficient service every time so we knew they were the right practice to use for our own home. We wanted to create a modern house that complimented the existing victorian cottage perfectly using as much of the local natural stone as possible. The house needed to sit comfortably with the natural landscape and we wanted to create an enhanced connection between the house, garden and the surrounding views. The outcome is exactly that and we couldn’t be happier.” Clients
