Home Transformation of the Year (over 2,500 sq. ft)

Winner : “Putney Riverside Restoration and Extension" by VATRAA

This restoration project in south west London transformed a Grade II listed Victorian house which had been in poor condition into a modern home. Completed in 2023, the project, with VATRAA responsible for architecture, interior and landscape design, included a rear and basement extension, and a full internal refurbishment, expanding the property from 194 sqm to 260 sqm.

The project began by addressing severe structural issues, including underpinning the foundation. A new basement was added, featuring a utility room, bathroom, and games room, connecting to a lightwell leading to the front garden. The front façade was meticulously restored with breathable lime paint and render to preserve the building’s historical character.

The ground floor extension introduced a new kitchen, dining, living, and reception area, enhancing the connection to the garden and natural light. Materials such as oak, natural concrete, and plaster reflect the client’s Sri Lankan heritage.

Key elements of the original house, including the staircase and floorboards, were carefully restored. Internal insulation was added without compromising the property's character. The rear façade now features oversized sash windows and a terracotta-coloured concrete finish that harmonises beautifully with the nearby trees.

The result is a sensitive balance between modern comfort and historical preservation.
