Championing design excellence: EcoHaus design challenge launched
The British Homes Awards have been pivotal in providing a catalyst for change in the creation of our new homes.
In his Foreword to the Awards’ publication : “Design. The key to a better place” Housing Minister The Rt.Hon. Kris Hopkins commented:
“The British Homes Awards continue to demonstrate the most imaginative and innovative designs, which inspire the creation of beautiful homes built to high environmental standards using the latest technologies. I would like to congratulate all those involved”.
Sponsored by Homebase and in partnership with the AJ, Passivhaus Trust, Kingspan Insulation and Habitat First Group, who champion design excellence and the preservation and encouragement of the natural habitat, the 2014 design competition competition challenged UK architects to design “EcoHaus” – a waterside home to Passivhaus standards for sites owned by the Habitat First Group.
Pioneered and developed in Germany Passivhaus is the world’s leading low energy building standard, focussing on the building fabric combined with high levels of insulation and optimal solar gain. Excellent indoor air quality together with high levels of heat recovery are achieved with advanced heat recovery ventilation systems that transfer heat from outgoing stale air to fresh air coming into the house.

Designed with the Passivhaus methodology the winning design – The Boardwalk House – designed by NPS Leeds – will present a new model for lifestyle living being environmentally smart and offering a healthy environment for the occupants.
