Championing design excellence: EcoHaus design challenge launched

The British Homes Awards have been pivotal in providing a catalyst for change in the creation of our new homes.

In his Foreword to the Awards’ publication : “Design. The key to a better place”  Housing Minister The Rt.Hon. Kris Hopkins commented:

“The British Homes Awards continue to demonstrate the most imaginative and innovative designs, which inspire the creation of beautiful homes built to high environmental standards using the latest technologies.  I would like to congratulate all those involved”.

From today until May 2nd  homebuilders, developers, registered social landlords, their architects and interior designer are invited to submit their schemes and projects within the ten Categories featured on this site.

Sponsored by Homebase and in partnership with the AJ, Passivhaus Trust, Kingspan Insulation and Habitat First Group,  who champion design excellence and the preservation and encouragement of the natural habitat,  the 2014 design competition competition challenges UK architects to design “EcoHaus” -a waterside home to Passivhaus standards for sites owned by the Habitat First Group.

Pioneered and developed in Germany Passivhaus is the world’s leading low energy building standard, focussing on the building fabric combined with high levels of insulation and optimal solar gain. Excellent indoor air quality together with high levels of heat recovery are achieved with advanced heat recovery ventilation systems that transfer heat from outgoing stale air to fresh air coming into the house.

Further details:

Designed with the Passivhaus methodology the winning design will present a new model for lifestyle living. It will be of stunning architectural merit, environmentally smart and offer a healthy environment for the occupants. Designs are invited for both the individual home and group of homes demonstrating how the design is capable of combining private and public space at a waterfront location.

As with the 2014 Award categories, the design brief for the competition is available to view and download on this site.

We look forward to recognising and celebrating your finest achievements in 2014.
