Queen Mary’s Place, Roehampton, London SW15

At the heart of this development is Roehampton House, a grade 1 listed treasure, which was rescued from risk of dereliction by developer St James. The developer has combined painstaking refurbishment of this mansion and its gardens with the building of new homes in a contemporary design. The 10-year, £250m regeneration and redevelopment project has been undertaken in conjunction with London borough of Wandsworth.

St James worked with architect Giles Quarme & Associates on the restoration of the mansion, which was originally built in 1712, and notably has a twentieth century extension designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The mansion now houses 22 one, two and three bedroom apartments, while its two gatehouses have been converted into two bedroom homes. Georgian sash windows, cornicing, fireplaces, wooden panelling and the original grand staircase have all been carefully restored.

Contrasting with the mansion are the new homes, particularly five contemporary two bedroom detached villas. A range of new homes have been developed in the grounds, set in a classic street layout overlooking squares and courtyards. Almost a third of the site is designated as outdoor space.
