Winner: Mixed-Use Development
Crest Nicholson’s Marina at Portishead sits within the mixed marina setting at Portishead. Originally the site was earmarked for apartment blocks, but the developer instead proposed a terrace of townhouses flanked at the north east end by an apartment block, designed by Stride Treglown Architects.
The buildings are set to the front of the site to create a sense of active frontage around the marina and give the maximum depth to rear gardens of the townhouses and a parking courtyard to the rear of the apartments. The buildings face out over the marina, townhouses having terraces to take advantage of the view, with large windows at ground and first floor level to the rear elevation to catch the early morning sun.
Earthy coloured materials have been chosen for building exteriors, including timber, western red cedar, and Parklex panels, which have a warm reddish base colour to them.
The row of townhouses follows the architecture of the apartment buildings, but is more uniform as they are all the same apart from the southwest end, which has two public elevations. This rhythm and rigour contrasts with the informal apartment building at the northern end of the site.
The development was constructed in line with Eco Homes (2006) and achieved an Eco Homes score of Very Good.
