The British Homes Awards

The four-bedroom detached villas designed by Alison Brooks Architects are part of the be:Newhall development by Linden Homes Eastern, which itself is part of the new 2,500 home Newhall settlement. The villas are located on the prominent perimeter boulevards framing the development, and have southerly oriented gardens. Externally the villas have angular lines and are finished in local brick, glazing, black timber weatherboarding and slate tiles. Covered porches shelter the front doors, which also feature full-height glazing. Front gardens are simple, low maintenance designs, and complement the dramatic aesthetic of the houses. The angular exterior translates to irregularly-shaped rooms.

At ground floor level the entrance hall leads to a study/guest room and an 8.3 metre-long open plan living/kitchen/dining area that looks onto a terrace. At first floor level there are two bedrooms, both featuring high sloping ceilings and one having a large balconied window. At second floor level there is a further bedroom, with sloping roof and Velux window. The timber frame homes achieve level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, thanks to such features as solar panels and high levels of insulation. The judges said of the winning design: “The house has an exceptional plan for a home of this size and a striking form. It’s a thoroughly modern family home”.
